Step-by-step process guide for paint booth protection

Safety first! Please always consult national regulations for suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for use against hazards, including isocyanates. PPE shown may not be adequate or suitable for your specific application or substances used.

  • Be aware:

When applying Dirt Trap Protection Material for the very first time, the paint booth surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned, all previous contamination and paint residue needs to be removed to provide a smooth, clean surface for Dirt Trap to adhere to. The cleaner the surface - the better is the adhesion of the Dirt Trap Protection Material!

First apply Dirt Trap Protection non-woven material (white) to the walls, then apply the clear Dirt Trap Protection Material film to any paint booth windows.

Dirt Trap Protection Material should be changed every 2-3 months by pulling the material off the walls and replacing it with fresh ones. If the non-woven material is saturated with dirt particles, the functionality is reduced, so change the material as regularly as needed. After 6 months on the booth wall, adhesive residue from the Dirt Trap Protection Material might remain. Store any unused material in dry conditions ideally at 20 °C (and below 30 °C).

    Step 2 - Applying

Once the material is attached to the surface, use the spreader using light pressure and work from the middle outwards to smooth the material and attach it firmly to the wall. (Pressure sensitive adhesion.)

Do not overstretch material when applying it to the wall!

Tip: Apply this film in tracks next to each other without overlap.

Technical tips for booth protection with Dirt Trap

Here are some valuable insights into specific paint booth protection challenges, including quick tips on changing and maintaining materials. For more in-depth information, click the link below to see each tip.

  • Customer Challenge:
Adhesive coating removed usually after 2-3 months with a high-pressure cleaner and water usage. The water in the spray booth must first dry, which means a longer downtime for the booth. Therefore, the cabin is usually cleaned when the time is right and not when it is necessary.

    Technical Tip:
3M™ Dirt Trap Protection Material should be changed after around 150 paint cycles or every 1-2 months by pulling the material off the walls and replacing it with fresh ones. If the non-woven material is saturated with dirt particles, the functionality is reduced, so change the material as regularly as needed.

Caution: After 6 months on the booth wall, adhesive residue from the Dirt Trap Protection Material might remain.

  • Customer Challenge:
If you use an adhesive coating, this needs to remove with a water high-pressure cleaner. The cleaning takes time and also the drying of the water in the cabin. Therefore, the cleaning is often done on Fridays, the drying lasts over the weekend and on Mondays the new adhesive paint is applied with a spray gun. This is done in order to reduce the downtime of the booth as a bottleneck during the weekly operation.

    Technical Tip:
After a one-time basic cleaning of the booth before the first application and some practice in applying 3M™ Dirt Trap Protection Material, the time required is significantly reduced. It takes on average 1-2 people and the complete time required for cleaning and new application only takes about 1 ½ - 2 hours.

The easy cleaning and application makes it possible to clean the cabin more often and faster with the enormous advantage that no water has to be used in the spray booth, which leads to corrosion and further and expensive consequential damages to the filters and other components.

  • Customer Challenge:
Depending on the size of the spray booth or due to the possibility of renewing individual sheets of the 3M™ Dirt Trap Protection Material, the remaining material on the roll and can be stored and used for the next change.

    Technical Tip:
Store any unused 3M™ Dirt Trap Protection Material in the original carton under normal conditions of 21 °C and 50 % relative humidity. Avoid storing the material in temperatures above 29 °C for long periods of time and keep it covered and clean.
