Step-by-step process guide for car primer application

Safety first! Please always consult national regulations for suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for use against hazards, including isocyanates. PPE shown may not be adequate or suitable for your specific application or substances used.

  • A hand with a green glove degreasing a car body part with a white wipe

Step 1 - Cleaning of the surface

  • Hands with dark grey gloves mixing the primer using a 3M spray cup

Step 2 - Mixing of the primer

  • Hands with purple gloves setting an atomizing head of a 3M Performance Spray Gun

Step 3 - Setup 3M™ Performance Spray Gun

    • Pull the trigger back, making sure the locking collar is in the “+ configuration”.

Slide the atomising head over the fluid needle and push towards the spray gun body. Secure the atomising head by rotating the retainer ring clockwise until the retainer ring tabs are locked in the “X configuration”.

Maximum HVLP Operating Air Pressure: 1.38 bar (20 psi)

Operating Pressure Range is between 0.5 bar to 2.4 bar (7 psi to 35 psi)

    Step 4 - Primer Application 1. layer

    • The 3M™ PPS™ System allows primer application from different angles without dripping, meaning edges and wheel arches can be coated safely. Modern primer technologies show reduced pot lives.

Using freshly mixed primer with every application avoids lamination of a surface and consequent shadow effects (scratch ring shows after solvent has dried away) and reduces the subsequent sanding work considerably.

    Step 5 - Primer Application 2. layer

3M™ Performance Spray Gun & 3M™ PPS™ in primer application allows you to create a finer coating due to always having a clean spray pattern.

This ensures a smoother primer. A smooth primer allows for time and work savings in the process of primer sanding.

    • Pull the trigger back. Rotate the locking collar counter-clockwise and pull the atomising head away from the gun body.

Clean the needle with a solvent cross linked cloth.

Simply put on the new nozzle in the size you need and you’re done - always store the 3M™ Performance Spray Gun with a nozzle on to protect the needle.

3M™ Performance Spray Gun and 3M™ PPS™ Series reduce cleaning work considerably and lowers your solvent consumption.

  • A car in a paint booth during forced drying process

    Step 7 - Forced drying

Please do observe the recommendations of your paint manufacturer concerning object temperature and drying time.

The quality of drying has a positive influence on the sanding properties of the primer.

Forced drying accelerates the repair process and at the same time ensures an even drying of the primer.

A primer which has hardened evenly and well can be sanded a lot easier.

Technical tips for car primer application process

Here are some valuable insights into primer application challenges before painting, including quick tips on estimating the material for each job or changing the nozzle. For more in-depth information, click the link below to see each tip.

  • Customer Challenge:
The recommendation of all paint manufacturers is to use the different grey shades of a primer in relation to the colour to be painted. As the change within the greyscales often seems too time-consuming and cleaning intensity, every job will be primered with one and the same grey shade.

    Technical Tip:
With the combination of the 3M™ Performance Spray Gun and 3M™ PPS™ Series 2.0 in primer application you are able to change the recommended grey shades quick and easy. The high solids content of modern primers makes cleaning even more difficult. Our products support you to save expensive base coats due to a faster coverage, in terms of the right primer shade and colour.

  • Customer Challenge:
When primer is mixed, one mix is often used to prime several repairs at the end of a working day, as primer is available at that moment and the effort of remixing and re-cleaning of the spray gun is avoided.

    Technical Tip:
There are several reasons why primer should be mixed freshly and applied straight away - such as shorter repair times and better estimate of the required amount of primer. Due to the shorter pot life of modern primers, this means the first primer application is good, but the longer the primer has time to start the curing reaction, the quality deteriorates. The different 3M™ PPS™ Series 2.0 Spray Cup sizes help to estimate the material required for each job, reducing the chance of overmixing.

  • Customer Challenge:
High solids content of modern primers makes cleaning difficult and short pot life of modern primers require immediate gun cleaning. This leads to accumulation of primer residue and deterioration of spray pattern and performance.

    Technical Tip:
When in regular use, changing the nozzle daily is recommended to maintain the superior performance of the 3M™ Performance Spray Gun. Definitely change the nozzle if the spray pattern begins to degrade or fluid begins to leak. Whenever you put on a new nozzle, you can expect like-new spray performance from your gun.
