Epoxy Adhesives

Durability for demanding environments.

ASK A 3M EXPERT

The standard for strength, durability and outdoor weathering

  • ‘Epoxy’ is often used as a generic term for a structural adhesive, but epoxy adhesives are actually a very specific class of structural adhesives. These chemistries are durable in demanding conditions, including not only outdoor weathering but also many solvents and other conditions.

One-Part Epoxies – One-part epoxy adhesives eliminate metering and mixing but require heat to cure, with newer formulations curing at lower temperatures than older versions.
Two-Part Epoxies – Two-part epoxy adhesives begin curing when the two components are mixed and offer different performance characteristics depending on the formulation.

Strength

Epoxies have the greatest strength and durability of all structural adhesives

Bonding

Structural adhesives bond dissimilar materials and also provide insulation to resist corrosion when bonding two different metals

Process Efficiency

Different chemistries provide a variety of surface preparation, open time and strength-build times so you can find the best options for your process

Impact Resistance

Epoxy bonds have exceptional resistance to shock, vibration and impact loads

Lightweighting

Adhering to new materials and distributing stress along the entire bond area helps designers use thinner and lighter materials

NVH

Vibration resistance reduces opportunities for unwanted noise

Aesthetics

Structural adhesives provide better product appearance through invisible joints and smooth bond lines

Water Intrusion

Structural adhesives provide a continuous bond line to prevent the migration of fluids, dust and dirt

Innovation in Design

The ability of structural adhesives to bond a wide variety of substrates allows the freedom to design for the best materials available

Benefits, Applications and Products of Epoxy Adhesives

  • 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Toughened Epoxy Adhesive has been used to bond carbon fiber while assembling lightweight drilling platform equipment. The adhesive creates secure bonds between carbon fiber and stainless steel, and field tests have shown it to be resistant to dynamic loading, crude oil, hydrocarbon mud and fragments of rock mixture flowing at 80 to 100ºC.

  • This white paper explores some of the advantages structural adhesives offer over mechanical fasteners, including keeping substrates intact and full-strength, spreading stress over the whole bond to improve fatigue resistance, and better aesthetics with no protrusions or refinishing. Structural adhesives play an important role in the move to lighter composite materials, which often cannot be drilled or welded.

  • This white paper discusses some advantages of structural adhesives and preliminary considerations to think about so you are better prepared when you talk to an expert. These topics include end-use conditions and stresses along with the performance characteristics and handling and processing characteristics typical of the different adhesive families
