‘Epoxy’ is often used as a generic term for a structural adhesive, but epoxy adhesives are actually a very specific class of structural adhesives. These chemistries are durable in demanding conditions, including not only outdoor weathering but also many solvents and other conditions.
One-Part Epoxies – One-part epoxy adhesives eliminate metering and mixing but require heat to cure, with newer formulations curing at lower temperatures than older versions.
Two-Part Epoxies – Two-part epoxy adhesives begin curing when the two components are mixed and offer different performance characteristics depending on the formulation.
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Toughened Epoxy Adhesive has been used to bond carbon fiber while assembling lightweight drilling platform equipment. The adhesive creates secure bonds between carbon fiber and stainless steel, and field tests have shown it to be resistant to dynamic loading, crude oil, hydrocarbon mud and fragments of rock mixture flowing at 80 to 100ºC.
This white paper explores some of the advantages structural adhesives offer over mechanical fasteners, including keeping substrates intact and full-strength, spreading stress over the whole bond to improve fatigue resistance, and better aesthetics with no protrusions or refinishing. Structural adhesives play an important role in the move to lighter composite materials, which often cannot be drilled or welded.
3M covers the spectrum of epoxy structural adhesives. We offer both traditional high-heat one-part chemistries and newer versions that cure at lower temperatures. We also have a wide variety of rigid, flexible and toughened two-part epoxies with a variety of specific properties.
