The classification models focus on potentially preventable events, not all negative events. They produce actionable results identifying hospitalizations, complications, ED visits and ancillary services that are "impactable," meaning interventions can have a measurable effect.
3M Preventables are appropriate for all patient populations and payer types, unlike Medicare measures for readmissions and complications. Because they are based on the same risk adjustment methodologies, they form a common, complementary measure set across disparate patient types and care setting.
