Novec insulating gases for the electric power industry

Make a meaningful change for the future of our planet. Choose 3M™ Novec™ Insulating Gases as an alternative to Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6), the potent greenhouse gas commonly used to insulate and protect medium- and high-voltage electric transmission and distribution infrastructure.

The electric grid is the conduit for our rapidly improving quality of life, and its reliability is critical with little margin for error. But while the electrical power industry makes people safe, comfortable and productive, if leaks or unintended releases of SF6 occur, this results in a significant greenhouse gas impact on the environment.

That’s why at 3M, our scientists have focused on the insulating gas needs of the electrical power industry, where SF6 is used. The results of this extensive development and testing are 3M Novec Insulating Gases, which are used in gas mixtures to achieve comparable levels of performance with a dramatically reduced environmental impact compared to SF6. If you’re looking to create a greener electric grid, we can help.

  • SF₆ alternative designed to reduce greenhouse gases

An SF6 alternative designed to reduce greenhouse gas impact by >99%

    • The electric industry has been willing to accept the challenges of using SF6 as an insulating gas because of its dielectric properties and reliability. But SF6 is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 23,500 times that of CO2 when compared over a 100-year period. In fact, it is the most potent greenhouse gas that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has ever evaluated. With an atmospheric lifetime of approximately 3,200 years, the concentration of SF6 continues to increase in the atmosphere. This led 3M to collaborate with industry leaders to come up with alternative solutions using Novec Insulating Gases. Tests demonstrate greenhouse gas reductions of more than 99% in on-grid commercial equipment.
